For over 175 years, Bingen has been upside down during the fifth season.
On Lumpensamstag, the streets of Bingen are filled with the sound of jesters wearing masks beyond recognition and the Rose Monday parades go on for kilometres, with Bingen's jesters investing a fortune year after year in magnificently decorated floats. Once a session, foolish ‘army camps’ even cause the walls of the carnival ‘storm-ready’ Klopp Castle to shake with the popping of champagne corks.
Since the 1930s at the latest, carnival has been an opportunity for the people of Bingen to enjoy themselves after surviving the wars. However, carnival was not only a cheerful, light-hearted highlight of the year, but also has serious historical origins. As an economic factor, the ‘fifth season’ is also an additional attraction for a tourist town like Bingen and an important source of income for tourism and the hospitality industry.
