very year on Walpurgis Night, the traditional Wine Witches' Night takes place in Oberwesel. The old wine witch is symbolically burnt and the new wine witch rises from the barrel with a large firework display to represent the town of Oberwesel and its winegrowers the following year.

Of course, the fine wines from the Oberwesel vineyards can also be savoured on this evening. In addition to the winegrowers' stands, the catering on the square will provide for your physical well-being. Music and dancing will create an exuberant atmosphere and a firework display will welcome the new wine witch.

About the history: The name “Weinhex” can be traced back to a custom from earlier centuries in which “witches’ fires” were lit and wheels of fire were rolled on the slopes and in the vineyards. With them the last winter demons were driven out. The wine witch should remember this and turn the winemaker's wine into a fine wine.

What is stirring in the basement?
deep in the vaults,
They are spirits, figures, and a powerful voice called out:
Walpurgis Night is Witches’ Night!
The spirit powers have awakened!

(Excerpt from the wine witch saying, text: W. Wißkirchen)
