We made no effort to make the church reformer Martin Luther a Rhinelander. Nevertheless, Martin Luther left significant traces on the Rhine river. This Rheintaler commemorates the Reichstag in Worms in 1521.
As is well known, Charles V had Martin Luther summoned to the Reichstag, where he was interrogated for the last time and was supposed to recant his theses.
Since Martin Luther refused any revocation in the two negotiations on April 17th and 18th, he was banned from the Reich. At the same time he was excommunicated by the papal bull. “Here I stand, I can't do anything else,” he is said to have said.
