In 2004, football fans took up the message of ‘Never again!’ from survivors of the former Dachau concentration camp and launched the ‘Day of Remembrance in German Football’.
Together with you, we would like to organise a theme day outside of classrooms and seminar rooms that combines football and sport with the life stories of Holocaust survivors. Football has immense appeal, it opens doors, invites people in and, last but not least, reflects society, (also) when we deal with anti-Semitism. This is demonstrated, for example, by the stories of Kurt Landauer, Julius Hirsch, Gottfried Fuchs and Walther Bensemann, pioneers of German football.
Individual and personal stories of survival not only touch us, they also raise awareness of anti-Semitism and discrimination. They demonstrate the importance and essence of democracy and show us how relevant it is to stand up for democratic values ourselves. Empathy, observation, questioning: we want to empower you to become active as secondary witnesses yourselves.
