Today's district town was founded on June 7, 1969 from the merger of the previously independent towns of Ahrweiler and Bad Neuenahr with the communities of Gimmigen, Heimersheim and Lohrsdorf.
The Art Nouveau-style Thermal- and Bathhouse has been in existence for more than 100 years and is regarded as a temple to the art of healing and a centre for the ‘symphony of the senses’.
The Ahr Gate (Ahrtor) is the largest of the four gates in the ring of Ahrweiler town walls. The outer archway is made of trachyte, an effusive rock from Drachenfels.
