AALSCHOKKER ARANKA

Off the island of Grafenwerth, in Bad Honnef, lies the eel barge Aranka, built in 1917, in the so-called ‘dead arm of the Rhine’.

The Aalschokker was owned by the Jansen fishing family in Bad Honnef and was bought and restored by the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation after the business was closed down. It has become a landmark of Bad Honnef.

Every year, Bad Honnef hosts the Eel Festival, founded by former government spokesman Friedhelm Ost, with the coronation of an Eel King. Economics Minister Wolfgang Clement, Finance Minister Steinbrück, Friedrich Merz and cabaret artist Konrad Beikircher have all been crowned Eel Kings.
