On 13 July 1883, the Drachenfelsbahn was officially opened as the first German cog railway with public passenger transport.
The cable car immediately became a crowd-puller, as the summit of the Drachenfels and the ruins could now be reached without any significant physical effort.
In 1913, the successful entrepreneur Ferdinand Mülhens (4711) took over the railway.
In the autumn of 1958, there was a serious accident in which 17 people lost their lives. Since then, however, there have been no more serious incidents.
Since 2006, the town of Königswinter has also been offering civil wedding ceremonies on the railway. Certainly an unforgettable experience.
