JOHANNES GUTENBERG

Johannes Gensfleisch - that was actually Johannes Gutenberg's name.

He was born in Mainz around 1400 and died there on 3 February 1468.
He is the inventor of letterpress printing with movable type and mechanical letterpress printing. His invention revolutionised book production and triggered a media revolution in Europe. His most famous work is the Gutenberg Bible, which was created around 1452.

His invention also led to the printing of so-called letters of indulgence, which offered forgiveness of sins by paying a sum of money (when the money rings in the box, the soul jumps out of purgatory). As is well known, the church reformer Luther did not like this and it ultimately led to a split in the church.
