The former building was destroyed by French soldiers in the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars and rebuilt in 1842 with the support of Prussian King Wilhelm IV.
In 1929, it was moved to its current location above Rhens, overlooking the Rhine Valley and the town of Rhens.
