Mainz Cathedral is the diocesan church of the diocese of Mainz and is dedicated to St Martin of Tours.
(*316/317 in Savaria + 8.11.397 in Candes near Tours). The east choir is dedicated to St Stephen.
There have been various preconstructions, but the date 29/30 August 1009 is irrefutable, when the cathedral built by Archbishop Willigis fell victim to a devastating fire, presumably due to the illumination on the occasion of his woe. Another important date is 1036, when Archbishop Bardo crowned the restoration of the cathedral, which had burnt down in 1009, with a consecration.
Over the years, the cathedral has evolved and each generation has worked to complete the cathedral. As a result, the cathedral combines many architectural styles to create a complete work of art.
