The year 2025 plays a special role at the Limes, as the Upper German-Raetian Limes celebrates the 20th anniversary of its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is an excellent occasion for numerous events at the Limes. This is also the case at the adventure museum and Limes information centre RömerWelt am caput limitis, which is kicking off the new season with an active theme day on 16 March.
A special activity will be a visit to the ‘MiQua op Jöck’, which will be making a stop at the beginning of the Limes with a brand new Roman suitcase. The luggage includes two virtual reality goggles, which visitors can use to travel back in time. Of course, the museum's outdoor stations with crafts and bakery will also be integrated and actively used. Visitors can once again look forward to tasty Roman breads. The highlight of the day will be a delegation from the Vindeliker Cohort and the Familia Poppaea in Rheinbrohl. With their equipment of an auxiliary unit and the depiction of a prefect family, they offer an insight into life at the Limes and in the Roman Empire at that time.
The Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate will also be celebrating the anniversary of the Limes. To mark the occasion, the GDKE has put together a roll-up exhibition and is presenting it at the start of the season in the RömerWelt. Around 13 banners highlight the various sections of the Roman frontier as well as the methods of investigation and the history of research. In keeping with the theme, the Limes coordinator of the GDKE, Dr Jennifer Schamper, will give a lecture at 3.00 pm, to which visitors are invited. To round off the event, various Roman and Limes museums and organisations will be presenting information stands in the museum grounds.
Of course, the exhibition on life at the Limes with its hands-on stations is always worth a visit.
