This is what Oberwesel is aptly called. From afar, travelers on the Rhine river can see the silhouette of Schönburg Castle, the red Church of Liebfrauenkirche and the proud defensive wall with its numerous towers. What better setting could there be here on the Rhine river for the Medieval Spectaculum, which every two years at Pentecost immerses the entire city in bygone times and a colorful Middle Ages?
The new cultural center in Oberwesel exudes architectural modernity, which skilfully combines with the charm of an old winery building. Citizens and guests meet here for exhibitions and concerts, and the history of the city finds a fresh and not at all museum-like setting. The city's great treasure can be seen at first glance and invites the visitor to get to know the traces of the Middle Ages and the former importance of Oberwesel in more detail. Literally “outstanding” discoveries await the visitor. 16 defense towers still rise today and connect the mighty city wall, which is accessible over long stretches. From up there, the city's historical richness looks even better and speaks of its former greatness with the Schönburg Castle and the two imposing churches, St. Martin's and Liebfrauenkirche.
